Wharparilla Wetland and reserves

Just outside of the Echuca township and a stone throw from the Mighty Murray River lays a 224Ha parcel of flat land in private hands. Although used for intensive agricultural purposes for many decades, the land is now being developed as a semi-rural housing estate. Crucial to the development is a green spine which harbours a complex Stormwater Management Plan developed by Stormy Water Solutions.

The aim is to drain the entire estate using grassed swales and limited pipe system, all of which feed a string of ponds within the central open space corridor, a space reminiscent of the Billabongs which flank the Murray River.

The landscape consists of mown and unmown grassed areas, regeneration areas for the iconic River Red Gums, an extensive path network, some boardwalk and playground in key areas.

The landscape concept is split into 2 distinct zones: the central more densely populated zone, when the landscape will be mown with family-type activities and the periphery where the landscape is to blend into the local bushland character of the Murray’s open riparian forest.

Working closely with Stormy Water Solutions, Travers Bushfire Ecology and WS&P engineers, the proposal considers WSUD elements, retarding basin flood storage and water quality management issues within the site whilst adhering to strict requirements for watercourses from the Office of Water NSW. Whilst minor swales direct run-offs to existing and new wetlands, the challenge lays in minimisation of their footprint to ensure maximal use of the land for burial with particular emphasis of safe and aesthetic integration of all WSUD and retarding elements into the landscape.

Townhouses and central courtyard

This new high density development on the edge of Royal Park offers great landscape potential in the form of an internal communal courtyard and numerous private roof-top terraces. The site is moderately steep across its diagonal marking grading a complex issue. A large Jacaranda exists on the southern boundary and every effort was made to relocate it in a prime position within the central space, under the expert advice of Established Tree Transplanters. Borrowing from the neighbouring Royal Park landscape, the internal courtyard consists of decking, elevated above a precious landscape of grasses, ground covers and Eucalyptus trees. Our proposal also includes the provision of large water tanks below ground, collecting roof run-offs for individual internal reuse. All Open Space run-offs are collected in tanks below an ephemeral creek and re-used for irrigation of all communal spaces.

Winner of the SIAV 2013 Award for Excellence in Infrastructure & finalist in the UDIA 2017 Award for Excellence.

The green rolling hills of Drouin welcomes a 500+ lot, high quality residential estate, owned and developed by a local Gippsland developer. Our practice was commissioned to oversee all landscape aspects from sales office to entry walls to playgrounds, local parks and a 9Ha wetland/park. The site is host to remnant Strzelecki Gums which are protected under Victorian Legislation.

Being part of multi-disciplinary team over more than 5 years, we worked with ecologists, surveyors, civil and structural engineers, marketing and Public Relations specialists, as well as stakeholders such as Melbourne Water, DNRE and Baw Baw Shire, to produce a high quality development which offers a Resident’s Exclusive Club, a purpose-built adventure playground, shelter, barbecue facilities, boardwalks, observation deck and artwork around a large wetland which will become the heart and pride of the local community.

Thomastown East Reserve

Thomastown East Reserve

With the assistance of sub-consultants Ecological Engineering Pty Ltd and in consultation with Melbourne Water, Laycock and Jaquet devised a design that retrofitted a portion of the neighbouring Thomastown East estate with WSUD elements aimed at water conservation design and improvement of water quality.
In order to do this, the site was graded to maximise the use of rainwater by directing available runoffs to grass and garden beds.
All paths were flanked on the upper side by swales filled with gravel and agricultural drains to redirect the runoffs to adjacent revegetation areas.

All available stormwater from the estate’s hard surfaces was captured in a new wetland on an old quarry site. Careful consideration was given to the sizing of the wetland to reflect the relatively small water catchment and thus minimising algal bloom and mosquito breeding. The wetland provides both flood management and essential treatment of urban water contaminants before being discharged into Darebin Creek.

This project demonstrates that both retrofitting WSUD elements and treating small catchments are well worth tackling and, if sized correctly and designed well, modest wetlands can have a marked and positive impact on the environment and the community.
