Working closely with Stormy Water Solutions and in response to Council’s WSUD initiatives, the proposal considers the existing playground and the topographical limitation on site. The aim is to incorporate the stormwater run-offs into a landscaped swales terminating into a lower rain garden, with particular emphasis on safe and aesthetic integration of all WSUD and treating elements into the playscape. The landscape concept draws on the local ecology, water patterns and the potential to educate and entertain children within a WSUD element. A sculptural platypus covers the pipe outlet. From there the run-offs are directed into a planted swales and children encouraged to play within the adjacent planted spaces where patterns and detailed spaces are more conducive to imaginative play. A series of elevated large stepping stones enable traffic from one end of the system to the other and protect plants within the swale from excessive foot traffic. A deck partially covering the rain garden acts as a destination for children and passers-by along the Mullum-Mullum bike path.
