Northern Memorial Park Masterplan

Northern Memorial Park Masterplan

We felt that a stormwater Management strategy was essential to the understanding of the site’s potential together with soil science and ecological assessments. The cutting-edge water sensitive urban design (The first Stormwater Management Plan of its kind in a cemetery) played a major part in the development of the masterplan for the Northern Memorial Park extension. The complete road layout was designed as a system for the collection and filtration of storm water. Major axial roads will have wide medians both to become way-finding landmarks and act as large water filtration devices; secondary roads will incorporate car parking and avenue trees planted which capitalise on road run-off.

A simple and easily understood circulation system, in contrast with the somewhat convoluted pattern in the existing southern section, was a major objective, as was the retention of all remnant and extremely old River Red Gums.

Melbourne’s Parks and Gardens Lighting Strategy

Melbourne’s Parks and Gardens Lighting Strategy

The parks and gardens of Melbourne are a major asset for residents and tourists alike. Not only are they venues for passive and active recreation, but also prominent elements in the fabric of the city.
With social changes, there is increasing demand for evening use, and developments in lighting technology create a range of opportunities to enhance the night appeal of gardens as well as their safety.

Interestingly the existing lighting gave a random light glow throughout parks but did not address pedestrian routes, colour rendition and lighting costs.
The strategy recommends a prioritisation of routes, a reduction in lighting after midnight for cost saving purposes, a change to Metal halide for better rendition and facial recognition and a suite of pole which reduced direct lighting and promoted refraction.
The overall strategy provides a rationale for comprehensive park lighting, and individual park strategies show how the rationale would be applied.
The strategy, which was a first of its kind in Australia, has been fully implemented.

Methodist Ladies College Playground

Methodist Ladies College Playground

In the heart of this prestigious Methodist Ladies College school grounds lies a rectangular remnant of an old established neighbouring garden.
Amongst established trees and adjacent to the Junior School, this land was to become the main playground for girls aged between 7 and 12 years.

A school masterplan was developed to allocate areas of passive and active recreation, as well as outdoor teaching.
The proposals explored alternative forms of play whilst focusing on the imagination – and typical behaviour patterns – of young girls.
The final scheme, developed with teachers and parents, offers a timber stage for performance and teaching space under old protected elm trees; a green maze with colourful panels for privacy; a display of artwork; a main playground structure with crooked floors, see-through panels, a jail and a disabled ramp with an associated cluster of small cubby houses.
The design was inspired by the great Australian shed in keeping with the rustic character of the land.
