WSUD retrofit

WSUD retrofit

A streetscape enhancement project combined with WSUD retrofitting. Designed by Stormy Water Solutions and documented by Procivil Engineers, the vegetated swales act as traffic calming devices. They provide much needed treatment for large catchment will runs into the Mullum Mullum creek. Designed to be low and easy maintenance, these constructed swales enhance the neighbourhood with native planting and street trees , all in keeping with the adjoining Mullum Mullum bushland corridor nearby.

In 2012, The Catholic Cemeteries Metropolitan Trust embarked on an ambitious journey to provide a visionary landscaped cemetery for the whole of Sydney. Our practice was entrusted with the task of designing an inspirational burial place on a large parcel of land (113 Ha) in Sydney’s West. Boasting panoramic views onto the Blue Mountains, Sydney CBD and the Campbelltown Valley below, it sits within the Scenic Hills and surrounds the historic Varro Ville House. The land presents multiple constraints, as is often the case on what is left of Sydney’s land suitable for cemetery development, including steep topography, the presence of Moist Shale Woodland and Cumberland Plain Woodland, heritage curtilage extending beyond the boundary of Varro Ville house, riparian zones and waterways, Aboriginal and European heritage, the potential for bushfires and tight Planning Control relating to the Environmental Protection of the Scenic Hills.

In line with our long-held philosophy that cemeteries should be designed as parks and provide a unique legacy to future generations, the vision for site will enable the client to showcase how a cemetery should be a respectful, emotional, sustainable and resilient landscape:
  • A sculpture Park, offering opportunities for local and Australian artists
  • An arboretum for future preservation and education of generations to come.
  • A cemetery which respects and safe keeps the important colonial landscape.
  • A concept which respects the Land, its landform and ecology by carefully laying roads and built environment and limit their footprint.
  • Concealed, private and low laying burial spaces with no visible headstones, to minimise visual impact.

Jackson’s View Wetland

Jackson’s View Wetland

In collaboration with Stormywater Solutions, Craig Civil Design and Melbourne Water, our practice designed this award-winning wetland amongst a strand of remnant Strzelecki Gums, a species protected under Victorian Legislation. With carefully placed artwork, unique purposely designed playground and shelter, islands for fauna habitat and boardwalks throughout, the wetland has become the heart and pride of the local community.

Just outside of the Echuca township and a stone throw from the Mighty Murray River lays a 224Ha parcel of flat land in private hands. Although used for intensive agricultural purposes for many decades, the land is now being developed as a semi-rural housing estate. Crucial to the development is a green spine which harbours a complex Stormwater Management Plan developed by Stormy Water Solutions.

The aim is to drain the entire estate using grassed swales and limited pipe system, all of which feed a string of ponds within the central open space corridor, a space reminiscent of the Billabongs which flank the Murray River.

The landscape consists of mown and unmown grassed areas, regeneration areas for the iconic River Red Gums, an extensive path network, some boardwalk and playground in key areas.

The landscape concept is split into 2 distinct zones: the central more densely populated zone, when the landscape will be mown with family-type activities and the periphery where the landscape is to blend into the local bushland character of the Murray’s open riparian forest.

Bonbeach Retarding and Bioretention basins

Bonbeach Retarding and Bioretention basins

Florence Jaquet Landscape Architect was engaged by VicUrban as part of the redevelopment of the old TAFE site into a 100 lot residential estate adjacent to Paterson River Country Club. Significant indigenous heath and large established Coastal Banksia trees adorn the site and were retained as part of the four local parks within the estate.

The main open space acts as a retarding basin and bio-retention pond mitigating and treating surrounding run-offs in storm events. Small WSUD (Water Sensitive Urban Design) swales in the nature strips treat the run-offs from the estate before they enter the main bio-retention basin which has been purposely designed using an angular and very contemporary layout showcasing that WSUD does not need to be naturalistic in appearance.
