Yan Yean Cemetery

Yan Yean Cemetery

Yan Yean cemetery is run by a volunteer Trust with a Vision: to create a memorable destination for the dead and the living. They subscribe to our philosophy : “ a cemetery should be designed as a Park and perform its social function well after it is full”. As such, we have designed a cemetery which enhances its existing attributes (water feature and Chapel) and weaves paths and artwork in key locations. In introducing sculptural architectural and memorial elements never seen before, we have ensured the unique and forward-thinking position of this growing site.

Young cemetery Masterplan

Young cemetery Masterplan

Having purchased additional land in the vicinity of the existing cemetery, Council embarked on a Masterplanning exercise, ahead of running out of time, knowing that the development of a new site can take up to 5 years of planning and construction.
With difficult constraints in topography and ecology, the site had a multitude of challenges.
Our services started with public and stakeholder consultation: first at the onset of the project and later, after the formulation of a preliminary Masterplan.
The Final Masterplan, which incorporated community feedback, offers a clear staging plan providing the full range of memorialisation and burial options, outdoor chapel, road network and parking facilities for a progressive and affordable implementation.

Box Hill Memorial Garden

Box Hill Memorial Garden

In a corner, near the new Mausoleum, lies a small irregularly shaped parcel of under-utilised land under a senescent Araucaria.
Our practice was appointed to design a memorial garden with “high-end” options, attention to detail and maximal yield.
Our design compliments the existing Mausoleum and blends in so well, it appears to have always been there.
It provides almost 300 above-ground ash positions and 500 niche urns in a wheelchair accessible environment.
The small and oddly-shaped site was a challenge but the resulting layout, centred on a water feature, creates a contemplative and serene space for memorialisation.
